Recently, when counted in years, but not according with the computer and applications, companies used their PC's to execute personal programs, a spreadsheet and a data base normally and, not very often a word processor - type writers were cheaper than printers and had no problems with Portuguese characters.

The main problem was the need of transfering manually data from one application to another, creating errors and time losses.

Then the first applications associating spread sheets and data bases to word processing and graphics came up. One of the biggest advantages of this type of packages was the price, still high but already lower than the one that would cost you if you did the purchase of the isolated items. The other advantage is that you could generate lists from data bases and, later on, to execute personalized mailing lists and, still, graphics from spread sheets.

Thanks to the multi-task functions from Windows and to the use and implementation of DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange), that allows the transfer of data commands between applications simultaneous, and to the OLE (Object Linking and Embedding), with this, the PC's clients operators may use the resident applications on the servers without leaving there own applications.

Microsoft Office makes it much easier both at the private and company level, mainly at the last one, through the creation of work groups.
By using Microsoft Office companies will profit with the savings they will do with training and, of course, with the way management will be improved.
